Trim is a virtual assistant that scans recent transactions to find and cancel unwanted subscriptions. Trim users saved over one million dollars last month, many of whom signed up for a free 30-day trial membership for credit monitoring or personal fitness, and simply forgot to cancel.

Cancellation rates for recurring charges

In addition to canceling recurring charges, Trim contacts cable and internet service providers to negotiate discounts. And they’re good at it, too.

I signed up for Time Warner Cable in 2010 and paid $35 for 100 Mbps internet through 2017. When Time Warner Cable became Spectrum, they raised my rate 86% to $65. My own repeated attempts to lower my bill were fruitless, but three days after signing up, Trim texted me back with good news—my internet service was now $15 cheaper.

In an interview with VentureBeat, Trim CEO Thomas Smyth said:

“A real pain point for the whole ecosystem is finding real uses cases for bots, and it turns out that if you have a bot that saves people money, people really like it.”

Whether it’s reviewing charges to save money or automating repetitive tasks to save time, finding use cases that people will form habits around will help the chatbot ecosystem continue to grow.
